According to this report, it was a MAC-10 with a home made suppressor.

Not so clear security camera footage is at the 07:25 time stamp.
((Anderson Cooper's interview with the 26-year old who disarmed the nut when he went to the second ballroom)).

As an aside, it may have been a malfunction that caused the shooter to pause, as the 26 year old described hearing "metal clanking on metal" as the shooter was trying to manipulate the MAC-10.
