The dirty secret is that nearly all Americans own highly effective, 2-3 use disposable suppressors. Watch the Jerry Miculek video on using a "field expedient pillow suppressor". A criminal sophisticated enough to care about disguising the sound of his gun shot would have no trouble procuring a unregistered pillow.
