Curious. From DPS?
Well yeah. Getting training from DPS instructors at the academy in low light, running and shooting and firing from cover. I would call that professional training. Well for me anyway.
Well okay then. ;-)
Trying to figure out why my snark detector keeps going off... I can't tell if your just being funny or trying to either insult DPS or us instructors that would like more training than we have already....

AF-Odin wrote: Thu Mar 31, 2022 5:40 pm Yes, I responded with a yes, keep me on the list at 1720hrs this afternoon after I got home from teaching a class. Hope they have us on the waitlist in the order in which we responded to the initial invite rather than the confirmation today.

As for them not thinking this out, it is almost what did you expect.

I would guess that not all instructors are going to want the expense of going to Florence for three days for a course that wilhave limited applicability. There are approximately 4,000 instructors in Texas, but how many are actively teaching on a regular basis. Currently, at the place I teach, only 2 of the 4 active instructors are applying, one already in the first class and me on the wait list. Other two are not interested.

Even if only 25% of the total instructors apply, it would take about a year with a class every month to get them all through.
Honestly I’m more interested in the free professional training than anything. Even if nothing comes of First Responder classes the course will give me the bones to teach more advanced techniques to LTC students. Win win in my book.

Yeah, just by the number of correction emails it’s obvious they didn’t plan this one out very well. At least 400 rounds of ammo isn’t going to break the bank anymore.

howdy wrote: Fri Mar 25, 2022 9:58 pm With so few Instructors that will be allowed to attend this course, it would seem they would take the best qualified. (I did not consider myself really qualified to teach some of the subject matter required) I would venture to guess that 90%+ Instructors are not really qualified either. We all know Instructors that have "been there, done that" and they should get first shot at this.
I suspect they will allow as many instructors that wish to take the course to do so. Our School Safety course was also limited to 12 participants per class. We were told at our instructor renewal that the FRC would likely be patterned after the SSC. If so, we aren’t going to be training the FRs to be SWAT teams. It will cover the basics of cover and concealment, using barricades, shooting from different positions, target discernment, situational awareness, and the like. The stuff we don’t get to teach in the LTC class but what every LTC should know how to do. Sounds like the round count is going to be pretty high (at least for the instructor training) so there will be a lot of range time. The round count is comparable to other “intense” training courses, so that should be both instructional and fun.

What criteria would they be able to use to determine “best qualified”?

The biggest problem is they threw this course out there without any real information. Now we’re all guessing what it is, how it’s going to be run, and if we really want to mess with it. For me it’s an easy decision. Training is training and this is free. The DPS does good training at a nice facility. The last three day course I went to cost me about $800 tuition. It’ll be worth a couple of nights hotel and ammo. If I don’t ever teach a FR class I’ll still come out ahead.
Well said. And agree, the training alone is worth a few nights hotel stay.

Re: First Responder Instructor Certification Training Course

Maybe it's good not to be in the very first class. I'm sure there will be some things to shake out and it may take a few to do so.

My wife has been wanting to go see her brother in Nevada except he and I don't get along... (Think Sheldon Cooper from BBT) personality... Anyway not realizing that even though there was a set date in the email that I wouldn't get that date she went ahead and got plane tickets for her and our boys for 5 days... OPPS... Guess I'm going to be ordering in for a week.....

Usually when your get your initial LTC instructor email you get a date about 6 months out and you are informed that you must act quick as the first X who respond with affirmative will get that class... This time they gave a date..

Checked RSD website this morning and still no update...
I’m presuming they will have multiple classes and haven’t released all the dates. They may also be seeing what the interest is before they schedule a bunch of classes.

If there is much in the way of “tactical” training, I can’t see there being more than about 20 max to a class. It’s one thing to stand on a static line with 60 others and wait for the target to turn. It’s a totally different thing to be running drills. Again, I just guessing at all of this. Hopefully we’ll get clarification soon.

Re: First Responder Instructor Certification Training Course

Yay. A new slide show to put together. :banghead:

I have one for LTC, one for Constitutional Carry, one for NRA basic pistol. My hard drive is getting full

I’ll probably attend, I’m just trying to decide or figure out if it’s worth the hassle. I can’t imagine lots of opportunities to do a class. Sure wish RSD would give us better information.

Re: First Responder Instructor Certification Training Course

howdy wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 9:34 pm So the course for us to be Instructors is 3 days of which there is probably 2 days of instruction, then we are to teach someone who is a Firefighter, EMT, Paramedic WITH a LTC, a course that could take 40 hours. How much can you charge someone and then dedicate an entire week to teach the course. How many students can afford the course then dedicate 40 hours to take it. How many Fire Departments will let their members carry? Am I missing something here?
Yeah, trying to figure that one out myself. I did call RSD to get more information, I was told they just found out today about the class as well. Said to go to the RSD website, I said there wasn’t anything on it and she said it should be updated soon.

Re: First Responder Instructor Certification Training Course

TRAINING

HB No. 1069 required the Texas Department of Public Safety of Texas to create a certification class (no greater than 40 hours) by a qualified handgun instructor by January 1, 2022.

The training course must be administered by a qualified handgun instructor and provide classroom training in:

Self-defense
De-escalation techniques
Methods to conceal and secure a handgun
Consequences of improper use of a handgun
Field training requiring physical demonstrations of proficiency must include:

Instinctive or reactive shooting
Tactical shooting

Shooting while moving

Not sure if my back will allow that.

Requires the department establish minimum standards for a training course for first responders who hold an LTC.  The course must be administered by a qualified LTC handgun instructor and must include not more than 40 hours of classroom instruction in self-defense, de-escalation techniques, tactical thinking and shooting, among other items.  Requires an annual continuing education course of not more than 10 hours. A qualified handgun instructor may not offer the training course before January 1, 2022
Interesting.... I wonder if it's worth taking it. There is no fee. Just travel and hotel for a few days...

First Responder Instructor Certification Training Course

Hey,
Did any other instructors get an email from RSD in regards to taking this course in Forence.. If so do you know what it's about.. The email really isn't clear. My first reaction was this was medical, but there is the elements for the firearm proficiency demonstration...So I don't really know what this is.

Mike
