Re: Montague Co: high-school football player fatally shot

Newspapers have to be careful about naming people and then getting sued for libel. As a rule, in this kind of situation, they do not mention someone who is not a victim, suspect, or public figure.

I'm sure everyone in town knows who the women are by now.

Re: Montague Co: high-school football player fatally shot

Officials are now using the word accidental, though the district attorney is speculating about criminal charges. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20130903-officials-denton-guyer-football-standout-nathan-maki-s-shooting-death-likely-accidental.ece" onclick="window.open(this.href);return...

Montague Co: high-school football player fatally shot

Near Bowie, Montague County, a white 18-year-old high-school student was found fatally shot inside a pickup in a field around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The deceased attended Guyer High School in Denton and was the starting fullback on the football team. The sheriff said that a rifle was found at the scen...

Re: GA: 17-year-old charged in shooting death of baby

All the European countries have lenient sentencing by our standards. They also have much lower rates of serious violent crime outside some pockets, like where the Mafia operates in Italy. France probably has fewer murders in a year than Chicago has in a hot summer weekend. They're democracies. They ...

Re: OH: Woman's house and goods wrongly "repossessed"

The Ohio case either hasn't been resolved, or was settled with a non-disclosure agreement. Meanwhile, in Logan, WV, nearly the same thing happened. The bank alleged gave the repo men the wrong address, and the repo men cleaned out the wrong house. Neither party is willing to accept blame. http://www...

Re: Houston Area Private Airport Parking Lots, 30.06?

The Parking Spot doesn't, either at Hobby or IAH. I've flown as recently as April. I also think The Parking Spot's service and security are good. I forget exactly what they charge, but they are competitive for covered parking. You should be able to get a small discount for an advance online reservat...

Re: Another Medal of Honor to be Awarded

Army Staff Sergeant Ty Carter received the Medal of Honor today (August 26) for heroism in a battle that took place in Afghanistan in 2009. Sgt. Carter is one of a handful of living Medal of Honor recipients from the Afghan war. Most are recognized posthumously or are long passed away. http://www.ar...

I wouldn't know.

I am a naturally curious person, but there are some areas I would rather not look into.

FL: Darwin award

I hope I'm not pushing the edge of the envelope too far with this one. In Port St. Lucie, Florida, an 18-year-old man rendered himself incapable of reproducing (though not fatally) while "cleaning" a gun. Police who investigated arrested the owner of the house for allegedly growing pot. Li...

FL: "Postal" murder-suicide crime

In Lake Butler, Florida (middle of nowhere, just south of the Georgia state line), a 72-year-old former employee of a trucking firm allegedly went around shooting people that he used to work with, killing two. He then put himself beyond the reach of human justice. http://www.wftv.com/ap/ap/crime/pol...

Re: Nearly-forgotten history: Mutiny on the Bounty

Small world.

I had a novice ham license a long time ago, when novices could only use crystals and key-code. I'm afraid my enthusiasm didn't last long. But radio is in incredible invention. It is not (necessarily) high-tech, but it works when all of the more sophisticated stuff doesn't.

Re: Nearly-forgotten history: Mutiny on the Bounty

The conflict between authority and justice. It's a fascinating story, both the mutiny and the survival of the captain and what was left of his faithful crew. If a U.S. naval captain acted like Captain Bligh or any of those 18th-century captains, he would be relieved of command in short order and pr...
