Reminder: Bring your radios

#1

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

I just wanted to remind everyone to bring your FRS radios to the TexasCHLforum Day. We will have frequencies set aside for announcements (ex. impromptu mentor sessions, etc.), answering questions, and an emergency channel. It will also be a great way to communicate with other people at the event simply by using a frequency/channel of your choice.

If you don't have an FRS (Family Radio Service) radio, you can pick them up at several locations and they are cheap.

Here's a tip if you want to hear the radio while wearing ear muffs. Just get an earbud for your radio and use it under your muffs. The cord won't make any difference in the hearing protection. If you have Howard Leight electronic earmuffs, you can plug into them using an adapter that comes with the HL muffs.

Great idea. I'm bringing mine. I had to dig it out of the "obsolete technology" drawer. ;-)

Another great reason to get the HLs

P.S. - The HL headsets graciously come with a 3ft 3.5mm cord that plugs into your iPod^H^H^H^Hmusic player of your choice.

They are UHF (462 Mhz) two-way radios and are limited to 500 milliwatts output on certain channels. Most have 22 channels/frequencies and around 120 "privacy codes" that are actually a tone-coded squelch. You can get them for around $40 a pair and up.
