Mexico: tourist drinks spiked at resorts. Many die but stories covered up

It appears American tourists are being given tainted alcohol or Mickie's at all inclusive Cancun resorts.

Some drown, some are assaulted, and some are taken advantage of at local hospitals.

Using buddy system doesn't help as both persons end up incapacitated and not remembering what happened.

"Hospitals" apparently require lots of cash to assist you. Happy to drive you to ATM.

Website Tripadvisor deletes your negative review where you talk about what happened to you. State department only lists your death as a drowning.

I haven't been to Mexico in over 30 years and don't see any reason to go back. Kinda like NY or CA.

I won't say they aren't drugging people or using bad alcohol, but at least the teenage girl who died and her brother who both passed out in a pool at the same time had, according to the version of the story I read, had only been at the resort a couple of hours and had taken 5 or 6 shots of tequila. I might pass out if I did 6 shots in an hour or 2.

Scary. My wife were in Cancun at one earlier this year. While it won't protect against every conceivable threat, canned or bottled drinks (like beer or wine, if imbibing) would seem to add some protection.

Dang... Lesson of the day: if you must drink adult beverages in Mexico, smuggle it in from the US.

Looks like someone important is paying attention. Maybe "tainted alcohol" is not a good reputation to have.

What do you want to bet, that the manufacturing company selling alcohol, had a supply of labels that were just like major US distilleries? Mexico, only takes action if they believe their tourist business (nearly their only business) is threatened. I'm sure the bars, and manufacturing plant, were paying law enforcement pretty well, to look the other way. Not that I needed another reason, but that moves Mexico, further down my list of places I'd like to visit. JMHO

There is a world map in my building. I looked at it for new places to visit with my wife.

Not much of the globe is "safe", especially unarmed.

General rule of thumb is that anywhere you cannot legally carry a firearm is not safe to visit. There are a few exceptions, of course.

A few exceptions but none of them are on the US East Coast.
I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.
