TX: Seguin physician arrested for double murder

This seems strange and awful:
Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigator Lt. Craig Jones said 30-year-old Tiffany Leann Strait and husband 27-year-old Anthony Ray Strait were lending a helping hand to a neighbor [the killer's mother] when it was reported that 56-year-old Robert Edward Fadal II, of Seguin, allegedly shot and killed them using a rifle about 11:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Timber Elm, located just north of Seguin in the Elm Grove neighborhood.

...

“There is no indication that there was a dispute between the victims and suspect,” he said. “We’re still working to understand why this took place.”
The murdered couple had three sons. So far no known connection between the doctor and the victims other than they were helping his mother.

The alleged killer has been a physician for about 30 years. It appears his family practice office near his mother's house.

This is one of those threads where a necropost from an appellate filing 4 years from now finally explains things. That's a long time to wait....

SEGUIN — The doctor charged with the murder of two neighbors in the Elm Grove subdivision later told investigators that he shot them because he feared they were Russian mobsters intent on killing his mother, who lived nearby, court records show.

But mere minutes after the Feb. 25 incident, 56-year-old Robert E. Fadal II emerged from his home and stated “he had killed two innocent people,” according to emergency responders who were trying to aid the victims, according to affidavits filed to obtain search warrants in the case.

Authorities suspect a factor in the crime may be drug use by Fadal, who they say appeared paranoid when questioned and spoke of receiving internet threats for having cracked a worldwide financial conspiracy.

Update: Fadal indicted on charge of capital murder
The Guadalupe County Grand Jury handed up the indictment on Robert Edward Fadal II in the May 3 setting.

...

Fadal also reportedly told deputies that he shot the pair because he believed they were part of the “Russian mob” and were at the residence to assault his mother, the document said.

“(Zuazua) was told Robert Edward Fadal had advised Sgt. (Patrick) Reynolds of a suicide note in his residence regarding the Russian Mob and events occurring within the stock market,” it said.

...

“Robert Edward Fadal claimed to Sgt. Humphrey that the Jewish people control all the wealth and that ‘they’ were communicating threats to him (Fadal) via his computer, his car and his cell phone,” Murphy wrote. “Robert Edward Fadal ... appeared to be very calm, but seemed somewhat paranoid, by stating that he could not speak around anything that was connected to the internet or any radio systems.”

Murphy wrote that Fadal was so insistent about the conversation not being “recorded via internet” that he wouldn’t speak with Humphrey until a digital wall clock was removed.

...
There's more but you get the drift. The cops also seem to think he was on meth and/or other drugs; awaiting toxicology reports.
