The police have a tough job. Geez. I wouldn't be able to sleep for a month after this.

Wonder why the entire video from the dash cam wasn't released? I've watched the body cam video several times and can't tell if the man in the white car ever fired a weapon.
Regardless, whether a gun or something else, you should have a reasonable expectation of police officer shooting you if you show any signs of pointing a weapon at them.

No kidding. In any case, definitely a mental issue - no way anyone in their right mind could expect it would turn out well to pull a gun on a cop. It will be interesting to find out more about the suspect. What was his past and was he wanted on criminal charges already?

I don't think it matters whether the man in the car ever fired. He had the weapon in a double-handed grip, clearly pointed at the officer. In the same situation, I would not wait to see if the other guy fired first, I would fire my weapon immediately. The officer did right, based on what video we can see, in my opinion.

Go watch the video on the Chron.com web site. The Chan 2 version cuts out an important sequence. The guy got out of his car, officer moved around behind the patrol vehicle and re-engaged. Also shot his own vehicle in the process.

That video answers my questions. He clearly shot at the officer when he was standing in the middle of the street just before the officer shot him again.

Wonder why Chan 2 cut out the part showing the officer was clearly justified in shooting an armed assailant?

Good question. Shows how editing can change perceptions that's for certain.

That’s no cell phone in his hands. No mistake, anybody would have fired. LEO, LTC anybody.

Can’t imagine what that old man was thinking.

The man was upset for being pulled over. He thought he got pulled over for no-reason. It happened to me once, and the police officer said, I pulled you over because your headlight running daylight bulb is burn out. No shots were fired, everyone went home.

This guy asked to be shot. The police officer did what needed to defend himself.
If any CHLer do not respond in similar fashion, he would be taken to the morgue instead of the police officer.

This is a justified shooting, from the evidence that we are seeing publicly. I don't know what the guy was thinking.

I think I saw the suspect fire at least one round at the officer as well?

I couldn't tell if he fired any shots while in the car, but looks like one for sure while standing.

Good shoot. Hope we learn something about the driver. Criminal history?

Definitely justified, and would have also been justified, IMHO if the motorist did not fire his gun.

One thing that struck me as strange though. Why did the LEO have a cell phone in his left hand as he exited his vehicle? His resulting one hand grip during the initial shots may have contributed to the apparent poor accuracy on his part.

Net-net, the good guy went home that night and the bad guy went to the morgue. No innocent civilians injured. Not a bad result.

I am going through the PPD Citizens Police Academy classes and I know this will be covered in next Tuesday's class. We had just listened to and viewed a couple of officer involved in our last class. I'm doing a ride along tomorrow night (GY shift for Sunday) so I'll try to get my officer's take on it as well. Looks like the guy was trying to decide what his next move would be before he raised the pistol.

WARNING- EXTREMELY GRAPHIC VIDEO OF THE FATAL SHOOTING!
Dashcam and body cam.
It appears very much as though he was purposeful in his behavior to get shot. I feel sorry for officer who was forced to do what he had to do. His actions are a testament to his training from what I see. He has no physical wounds, but I know the psychological wounds he suffers must be terrible.

Updated: Suspect has been identified -according to the Houston Chronicle:
The man shot by a Pasadena police officer after a traffic stop Thursday had a history of violence and once told his daughter he hoped "to do suicide by cop," according to court records.
