URGENT Call to Action on Campus-Carry

#1

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

We need everyone to call and/or fax your Senator and ask them to support Sen. Wentworth's Amendment 7 to SB5!!! Ask them also to oppose any amendments to Amendment #7 that are not acceptable to Sen. Wentworth. Sen. Zaffirini billed down her bill until 11:00 am tomorrow, but she can pull it down again.

She has two choices, permanently pull down her own bill, or allow Sen. Wentworth's Amendment #7 to be voted on, along with numerous amendments to the amendments that campus-carry opponents will offer. Don't worry about the House Calendars Committee; they won't kill the higher education bill.

If you want campus-carry to pass, then please respond to this call-to-action.

I called Senator Harris' office and followed up with an e-mail to his assistant (she provided her direct email) with the specifics that you requested, Charles. Senator Harris was a co-sponsor of campus carry. She said that she wasn't familiar with the Amendment #7 strategy but that she would certainly pass on to the Senator my specific request. I asked her if she needed more phone calls from people to help Senator Harris understand the depth of concern in Denton county. I reminded her that Denton county had a large growth rate in CHLs in 2010 and given UNT, this is a hot topic in the area.

Apparently mine wasn't the only contact today with her on this matter.

I called my senator.

Unfortunately, mine is Mario Gallegos, so who knows how much good this will do!

Senate back in session now 3:57 pm
Desk is clear
may be about to adjourn... making announcements now
Adjourned

I faxed again just now ... (SOMETHING like below)

LOWER SCHOOL INSURANCE RATES BY PASSING CAMPUS CARRY

Please support Sen. Wentworth's Amendment 7 to SB5 and oppose any amendments to Amendment #7 that are not acceptable to Sen. Wentworth.

if the school can't be held liable for damages, that's ZERO RISK as opposed to currently they CAN be sued if someone steals a gun from my car and uses it ... so Insurance should decrease if this bill is passed

a) A court may not hold the state, an agency or subdivision
of the state, an officer or employee of the state, an institution of
higher education, an officer or employee of an institution of
higher education, a private or independent institution of higher
education that has not adopted rules under Section 411.2031(e), an
officer or employee of a private or independent institution of
higher education that has not adopted rules under Section
411.2031(e), a peace officer, or a qualified handgun instructor
liable for damages .....

(b) A cause of action in damages may not be brought against
the state, an agency or subdivision of the state, an officer or
employee of the state, an institution of higher education, an
officer or employee of an institution of higher education, a
private or independent institution of higher education that has not
adopted rules under Section 411.2031(e), an officer or employee of
a private or independent institution of higher education that has
not adopted rules under Section 411.2031(e), a peace officer, or a
qualified handgun instructor for any damage caused by the actions
of an applicant or license holder under this subchapter.

1) Guns ARE already allowed ON CAMPUS, JUST NOT IN BUILDINGS, secured and concealed like they are everywhere else in private businesses whose rates did NOT increase for "failing" to post a 30.06 sign.

2) The bills provide IMMUNITY for campuses , which they currently DO NOT HAVE even though guns are already allowed on campus.

SINCE guns are already on campus and since they'd have a new IMMUNITY from liability, the risk of suits decreases as would insurance premiums.

Insurance is a risk-based business.

Less risk = less premium.

Guns are already on campus, stored in cars for burglars to get, no increased risk, actually, decreased risk if carried safe and secure and concealed than if stored in cars for burglars..

Immunity from lawsuits = less risk

Less risk = less premium.

Phone call complied with...actually got a human being on the phone and expressed my wishes for Senator Jane Nelson to support Senator Wentworth's Amendment 7 to SB5. I was VERY surprised to talk to someone, not just a message on a machine.

Just emailed my Sen. Mike Jackson to support it.
He's a good guy and I know he will.

Got the message to Senator Nelson.

Now if we can just get the House to move HB 681, or SB 321 out of calendars.

Thanks for posting the list of Senators on either side of SB 354 baldeagle, I was looking for that earlier.

I left a voice mail for Senator Estes asking him to support Amendment 7 to SB 5 and to oppose any amendments to the amendment that are not acceptable to Sen. Wentworth. I also thanked Sen. Estes for coauthoring SB 354.

Also:

Here is what you can do:

In addition to calling, faxing and E-mailing ...

Just do the opposite of what is on this pages for "countermeasure"

http://us1.campaign-archive2.com/?u=211 ... bc19bd870f" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Call Lt. Gov. Dewhurst.
You can call him at 512-463-0001
The Lt. Governor is a strong supporter of higher education. Tell him to be sure campus carry with the immunities passes as amendment 7 to SB 5 without any added amendments which Wentworth doesn't want. (Otherwise they risk having one of the other campus carry bills pass which offer no immunity)

(I believe Dewhurst supports campus carry anyway)
