An event to draw attention to the value of self-defense handguns

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

A discussion related to a national day of awareness for handguns, self-defense, "gun free zones" is being discussed in this thread. http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=84431

I like the idea of doing it in Texas, but organizing it on a national scale won't work. If you are interested in the concept, please answer the poll. I say "concept" because, at this point, it's only a concept that would have to be fleshed out of we decide to do it. I'm suggesting Sept. 1st since that's the day SB60 became effective setting up the Texas concealed handgun system. Unfortunately, that's on a Thursday this year. An alternative would be to do it on the first Saturday in September each year. Those are details to be worked out later, if there's enough interest. I don't want to do this unless we can do it big. I don't want it to turn our like the anti-gun or open-carry demonstrations at the Capitol where the three people involved couldn't find each other.

I'd like to vote to help organize, but I have no idea what would be involved.
I'm a pretty good operations type person, but don't have any experience in organizing and promoting events like this.
However, I'm interested and happy to lend a hand in support of competent leadership.

I like the idea a lot Charles, I was going to suggest Sept. 2 since it will be a Friday this year, but then we would run into issues in following years. I like the idea of the first Saturday, I don't know how much organization I can assist with, but I'm all in on promotion. I would be willing to post signs, hand out flyers, etc..

I agree that it must be planned well and have enough participants to keep it from being a non-event. Please keep us updated.

I'd like to help organize, but can't commit without knowing what that involves as far as time and availability. I can definitely help to promote and will attend if at all possible.

I would recommend against the first Saturday in September. That coincides with the start of school and Labor Day, both of which might make it hard for people to attend. Might I suggest December 15 instead (ratification of the 2nd amendment)?

I agree with what soccerdad just said. In addition, the first Saturday in September is probably one of the 2 the busiest days of the year for hunters. While dove season always opens on Sept. 1, it is usually the following weekend before thousands and thousands get an opportunity to hit the road to hunt. The next busiest weekend for hunters is always the first Saturday in November.

Excellent idea. I put promote, but I'll help with anything that I possibly can. Not much of a "community organizer" on my end. :smilelol5:

Sign me up for everything right now. Once we have more information, I may need to alter my initial commitment. But at the very least, I can help organize & promote. Also, I'd suggest using the 1st Saturday of Sept as the date. That way we wouldn't run into weekday issues (time, space, etc).

I would volunteer to help, but if it's labor day weekend, a lot of people travel to see family during that time. I know I won't be at home.

I am in. I do dove hunt but would put it on the back burner. I might suggest a Sat. after election. So that our newly elected house and senate would see the strength and it would be fresh on their minds. We would have to do it big and calm though to make the impression we need.

How about Feb 2nd? Then you can honor the 2nd Amendment on the 2nd day of the 2nd month.

Charles

Really like the idea. However, remember in Texas that Sep 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Dove Fields

Understand that our community is made up of many differnt folks with different ideas of what is and is not appropriate, but I hope that when we do this event it will be with a desire to put our best foot forward to those who are not part of the gun owning community.
