Drivers license has been used as a comparison in several posts, and I can attest to the fact that there are many elderly folks who should not be driving any longer. I think the renewal class serves as a good check and balance. I sure wont mind going back in four more years for another class. It was a lot of fun.
Driving is not a Constitutional Right and should not be classed/compared to one.

Thankfully, TexasCHLforum exists and other places that we can get information.....

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetfo ... chl-16.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As informative as any CHL class I've ever taken.

No need to take a renewal class. If you are serious enough to carry a firearm, you should be serious enough to keep up with the laws. A renewal class won't change your commitment or training level.

The state should send a yearly newletter or something that reminds us of what the laws are and highlights any changes in the law from previous years to help us keep up to date, thats the least they can do with funding from our renewal fees.

I am all for constitutional carry but we are not there yet, so until then we must deal with the chl system.

Sometimes I really wish a lawyer would chime in and clear things up. Do we have any lawyers on this forum?

This would be an awesome thing for me since come Aug '13 I will lose my CHL due to the class requirement to be taken in Texas. Stinks that because this is my second renewal and not my third that I lose the 9 years I have invested in my Texas CHL...

If this doesnt pass, I, being in the military and now stationed in Virginia, will have to get a Utah (in addition to the Va and Pa I already have) in order to keep close to the amount of current states that I have when I lose Texas. Boo!

Does this mean those of us with licenses that expire after Sept 1, 2013 will not need to take a renewal class If this actually passes and goes into effect on Sept 1, 2013?

My original license expires Oct 31, 2013 - will be my first renewal.

This would affect us one day every five years. 1/1825 or less than 0.1%

It would be convenient but its gravy. Campus carry and open carry are more meat and potato. Its nice to have some gravy on mashed potato but gravy by itself is a sad meal to swallow.

I run with about 20 people that have a CHL. There are times that we will enter into conversations that deal with the penal code rules that have changed and I am amazed at just how many are not aware of those changes.
Having a CHL is a earned privelidge and refreshing your knowledge of the penal code once every five years is no imposition. We have all heard the "ignorance of the law is not a valid defense" statement, well we should be sure that we know those laws, to prevent breaking them because we did not know they were changed or added. Not doing so not only prevents us from protecting our rights to legally carry. If you get into a "conversation" with a LEO over you carrying your weapon in an area he might think is illegal, knowing that code could very well keep you out of those silver bracelets and your gun remaining in your holster. I personally feel better knowing that those of us who carry are knowledgable of the laws and prove at least basic shooting proficiency, once every five years, as a part of that earned privelidge. I want to also address the human body and how it is affected by age and health. As we get older it can become harder to remember the laws and qualify in proficiency. I personally saw a gentleman at one of my re-qualifications that shook so bad he could hardly hit the target and his vision was such that he actually shot the target next to his a couple of times as well. Five years earlier this was not the case with this man!!! Human beings will always look for the easy way out if offered.....oh and I also feel that we should all retake our driving tests once every 3-5 years for the same reasons!!

If it is a privilege, why did the courts rule that IL had to institute a conceal carry program? I think you're a little off on you're thinking on this point.
I believe in personal responsibility. It is my responsibility to keep up with laws that affect every area of my life. I don't need or want a government mandated class to "keep up" with the changes that impact my life.

Zombie threads are cool!!!!!

Anyway. The argument that a renewal class every 5yrs keeps us up to date is a bit faulty since the legislature meets every 2yrs. I got my chl last Sept. So if I waited until 2017 to refresh my info, I'd be 2 legislative sessions behind and then get my renewed license before the 3rd session adjourned.

My life. My license. My responsibility. Removing a small bureaucratic step from the process is better. Besides, the chl class isn't really training in the first place. I'd simply a way for the state to be able to certify that that chl holder has received the required info.

I forgot to add: Charles Cotton will be holding chl refresher courses at PSC in Friendswood. $50 if you're a PSC member, $60 for non-members.

:iagree:

I can read the CHL-16 without having to sit through a class and spend $50 or so..
