Just a Question?

Will Dewhurst be acting Governor while Perry is out of state next week? If so, could he add progun bills to the special session agenda? Such an act would take Perry off the hook and might be good for his possible run for governor.

That's an interesting question. I'm not sure whether the powers assumed by the lieutenant governor when the governor is out of state include the power to call or add to a special session. Of course, since Perry isn't leaving until Sunday, this is probably a moot point--that would leave only ten days (or less) to address any issues added by Dewhurst.

On a related note, there are rumors brewing that Perry is about to add more issues to the call. Whether any of those issues relate to firearms remains to be seen.

According to 'Quorum Report,' these are the issues to be added:

"Legislation relating to est. a mandatory sentence of life with parole for a capital felony committed by a 17 y/o offender"

"Legislation relating to the regulation of abortion procedures, providers, and facilities."

I find it interesting that the special session calls are following bills that have been filed. The calls are also following Dewhurst's earlier public statements regarding the special session.

Another question involves the 30 day thing. Is that 30 calander days, or 30 days in session? There have been very few days in session so far.

Thirty calendar days--the session ends June 26.
