The race for Speaker of the Texas House

Since there’s no forum yet for the upcoming 87th legislature, I’ll just drop this here.
Yesterday, my state representative (HD9) Chris Paddie announced his candidacy for Speaker of the Texas House to replace Dennis Bonnen. The 87th Legislature will be his 5th term in the House.
Additionally, Trent Ashby from Lufkin, Geanie Morrison from Victoria, and John Cryier from Lockhart, have also filed from the Republican Party.

Democrats Senfronia Thompson from Houston, and Trey Martinez Fischer from San Antonio announced their candidacy.

I’m sure there will be others who will toss their hats into the ring. I sincerely hope that whoever comes out on top will serve in the position with more distinction and honor than Bonnen has.

I see where Oscar Longoria, of Mission, has also filed.

Bonnen ignored the Texas GOP platform last session.

Texas Tribune describes Phelan as “Bonnen top lieutenant.”

Oh boy.

My concern with Phelan is twofold, the first as already stated is that he is close to Bonnen. The second is that one of the dems backing him is Rafael Anchia whom I consider as one of the most virulent anti-gun people is the State House. Let the Caucus meet first.

What’s the breakdown of Republicans to Democrats on Phelan’s list of supporters? My local Rep. has ended his bid for the Speakership in favor of supporting Phelan.

ETA - Phelan tweeted earlier that his list has now grown to more than 90 supporters.

Looks like we might be stuck with another RINO for Speaker :banghead: :mad5

Earlier today, before Morrison’s announcement, Phelan tweeted that he had secured the support of 57 Republicans and 49 Democrats.

I know it's not much, but Phelan DID author HB 1177, the bill allowing unlicensed carry in the event of a mandatory evacuation due to a state of emergency. Granted, it is a very small step, but it's in the right direction.

I’m not finding the post at the moment, but I saw a link mentioning that the incoming speaker is going to (once again) allow the opposition party to chair certain committees...no idea which ones.

Confirmed as Speaker.

I assume its about two months late to email him encouraging a Republican to be put in charge of any committee that may get gun bills.

I wonder when we will see his list of committee assignments.
