Acronyms Galore

Post by Griffen »

As I peruse these threads learning from more experienced gun owners, I often come across acronyms that are new to me. I often take the time to figure out what they mean from the context of the message or thread. Its sort of like a crossword puzzle for gun owners. I even figured out the IMNAL meaning, which seems to apply to most of us. (Funny how no one admits to being a lawyer - my respect to Mr. Cotton!).

Some are obvious such as CC: concealed carry, BG: Bad Guy, etc.

However I just can't figure our IMO. I see it periodically but can't figure out from context what its supposed to mean. Does anyone have a shooting acronym directory??:

IMO = In My Opinion
IMHO = in my humble opinion
IMNSHO = In my not so humble opinion
Rare ones here, are :
fcol (for cryin' out loud)
and
oslt = or something like that
rare, because those two are annoying .... oslt

Probably more information that you ever want to know at this website http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/, although YMMV

pretty impressive list. More complete than most.
(I always check 3 items I was present for when they were first said)
FCOL
OSLT

and
SDSOBWDTAT (which is missing from their list)
Sorry, 'SDSOBWDTAT' is not present in the database!

SDSOBWDTAT is a response to GMTA (Great Minds Think Alike; said when 2 people say or post the same thing at the same time)

Conversationally:
GMTA = Great Minds Think Alike
SDSOBWDTAT = So Do Stupid Ones, But We Don't Talk About That/Them)

[ Can I get an LOL? :biggrinjester: )

This board isn't as bad as others for using acronyms. There are some common ones that I've even seen used here on occasion.

FWIW (For what it's worth)
AFAIK (As far as I know)
SWMBO (She who must be obeyed)
TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it)

The one that took me a while was "YMMV"... I felt really dumb when I was finally told - Your Mileage May Vary

DH (dear hubby) explained the first time I was on what IANAL and the other 2 that go with that one = I do not play one on TV and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night (I can't remember all the letters that make it up and don't want to make anyone LOL  by getting it wrong)

I work in the medical profession and don't realize how many abbreviations and acronyms I use until I write a letter to someone. I have had folks call me and say "what does _______ mean?" And Universal Technical Institute's logo makes me giggle everytime I see it - no offense, it just means something Totally different to me.

Good luck on the decipher - it is fun!

True story: My firm is usually considered the epitome of acronym use (except maybe second to DOD). There are daily meetings and briefings to my level and above, and I am one of those who will consistently ask "What does that mean?" (Indeed, often necessary, because acronyms are often reused due to ignorance, or just because they wanted to.)

Too often, the response comes back from the briefer, "I don't remember." You can be sure our discussion takes on a different flavor after that.... "rlol"
