Need suggestions on red dot sights for smith/wesson ar15

Looking at getting a red dot sight for my smith/wesson ar15, does anyone know what the military is using these days? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....

The military uses aimpoints with 4 and 2 MOA dots, ACOGS with various reticles, and Eotechs.

The Marine Corps uses the Trijicon ACOG; I haven't run across a unit that "officially" uses aimpoints or EOTechs though.

If you really want to use the ACOG, they're going to cost you about 1G (give or take).

Much is going to depend on what you want the red-dot FOR. If you're using it simply as a reflex sight, then there are less expensive and quite decent pieces of gear out there. Aimpoint and ATN come to mind - in fact, an ATN Digital UltraSight is what was on mine most of the time even though I had an ACOG issued.

The ACOG has 3x magnification but, in true reflex sight style, no eye relief. It is a great balance between distance shooting and close-in reflex shooting, although it takes some practice to get used to shooting close-in/eyes open at a power of 3x. The BAC models use a fiber-optic rod on the outside of the scope to illuminat the reticle - very cool and uses no batteries. No well-lit reticle at night, though.

Like I said, the ACOG is very cool - but I preferred my ATN most of the time. It all depends on what you want your scope to accomplish.
