HiPoint JHP failure to ....?

#1

Post by jmorris »

Had a student today firing a HiPoint JHP .45. First series went fine then he had a failure to load. I called a cease fire and we looked at the firearm. I swear that it looked like the case had stuck in the chamber and the seat had been ripped off. I loaned him my ATI 1911 to finish. We completed the course and set down to look at the firearm. Below is a view of the chamber. He said he had at least 300 rounds through this firearm.

For the life of me I could not understand what I was seeing. The edge was so clean I don't know how it could be the seat ripping off. Maybe the case had a cut around the base that wasn't noticed? Then I looked down the barrel. Now I was entirely bamboozled.

Yes. That's the primer you're seeing. Somehow this case did a 180 and got shoved into the chamber by the next round.

The ammo was Federal ball. Fed in my 1911 without any problem.

I don't understand how it could have done that? Stranger things have happened. i would have said he loaded it backwards but obviously the primer has been struck and the bullet has fired. This is interesting. I will be following this thread

Look at the ejector and the extractor. One of them malfunctioned and let the empty just flip over and the slide rammed it in. And was it the last round in the mag.
Actually I would call/email HiPoint and send them the pic. They might be interested.

The exact same thing once happened with my Browning Hi Power... the fired round made a 180 turn and was jammed in by the next round. Never happened before or after that.

Ammo gymnastics. Cool. Learn something new everyday.

"Hey, bet your gun can't do this..."

Don't HiPoints have a pretty heavy slide? Might have enough force to do that.

Also, I assume that is the fired empty case that got caught and jammed back in.

It's a heavy pistol. Heavier than my 1911. I was thinking that if it was a very light pistol perhaps the recoil could be forcing the pistol up so fast that it was catching it but I don't think so with this one.

Was not the last round. It tried to feed a round behind it. As I said he said he had at least 300 rounds through it and he emailed me that after he got the case out (rather easily) he put 50 though it with no malfunction. I'm chalking this one up to chaos theory.

Funny thing, he's wife's Ruger also malfunctioned. They took it back to the dealer (recent purchase) and found out the transfer bar was stuck.
