Started a new AR Project.

I've already got AR15s in barrel lengths of 10.5", 16" (x2), and 18", and so I decided that it was hight time to build a proper gov't profile 20" rifle (semi auto, of course) replica of a M16A4.

I finished the upper tonight, and mounted it on my DMR lower just for grins:


The upper consists of:

- a BCM complete flat topped upper receiver, BCM BCG, and BCM Ambidextrous Gunfighter charging handle, with BCM 20" gov't profile 1:7 barrel, "F" marked fixed front sight, and A2 flashhider.
- a Knights Armament Co. M5 RAS hand guard system.
- a MaTech rear BUIS
- a Trijicon 4x32 BAC ACOG
- a AAC 3-prong flash hider (not yet mounted) so that I can mount my AAC suppressor.

On order:

- a Colt carry handle with A2 sight. (Just in case I want to go full retro.)
- a Colt complete lower with A2 buttstock.

I'm going to cheat a little and put a Geissele trigger in it. But it should be a pretty cool full sized AR when it's all finished.

It took 4 hands, like you said! My wife got involved. Once I got it about 99% on, a sharp whack on the top dropped it into place. What made it difficult - as if delta rings weren’t a pain in the butt to begin with - was that there is a hinged piece with two “teeth” that has to swing free on either side of the gas tube, and then locks into the delta ring by tightening down a screw, but it is clumsy getting that doohickey to go into place, all while pulling back omg the delta ring. Tell you what though..... I’m not changing that handguard ever again. It’s on tight, and it ain’t going anywhere.

Still needs the KAC forward vertical grip, and I have a Colt carry handle with A2 rear sight on the way.

I really enjoy my A4 set up, they're great guns and the A2 stock works well for me.

But just for fun I tried to create an American version of the Canadian C7A2, using the KAC M5 and a PA 5x instead of the Elcan. I have to say, I really like this set up.

Were you using a delta ring tool?

I struggled in the past with delta rings (without the tool) so I could install a new/different hand guard.

Then I bought a delta ring tool. (roughly cost me $12.00)

The tool made removing a delta ring easy as pie.

No, I wish I had though. I made up for lack of a delta ring tool through creative use of language.....so to speak.....

No, I wish I had though. I made up for lack of a delta ring tool through creative use of language.....so to speak.....

When I bought my first AR last year, I was able to move the delta ring enough to get the handguard off and then back on. A few months later I bought a new handguard and couldn't get the delta ring to move enough to get the old one off (even utilizing creative language). Went onto Amazon and ordered the delta ring tool, which turned the ordeal into a less than 5 minute job. Well worth the money.

Heck, you can do that with a 16" .308, easy. I've done 500 with an 18" 5.56......on a really windy day. With the right 20+" barrel in .308, you'll be hitting steel at 800-900 yards - maybe even 1,000, with the right rifle.

You will like how soft a rifle configured ar will shoot. Not that the carbines have a lot of recoil but the rifles are noticeably softer. Get ready to hear the twang of the buffer spring.

My 18" SPR has a rifle length gas system, and it recoils softly too.
