Hi all -
Been considering buying myself a bolt action rifle. Currently thinking I would like to go 300 win or 338 lapua - however after looking around, I think I would like to get a custom/aftermarket stock for said rifle. I know how to custom build an AR type platform, but never really looked into it for a bolt action rifle. Hoping to get some advice/info on how best that can be done. Do you have to buy said gun with standard stock and then get it mounted on the new stock, or is there a way to 'piecemeal' it like you would an AR - ie buy the internals/barrel/etc and custom stock to have them mounted/installed on it?
Last piece of the puzzle, can anyone recommend a good gunsmith to do these things in the Houston area? This is a project that I probably won't be ready to commit to until later next year, just trying to do some research on it now.
Thanks for any info/advice in advanced!

Places like Brownells offer barrelled actions just for such projects.

The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.
