Why not an AK
Or two?
Or two?
God, grant me serenity to accept the things I can't change
Courage to change the things I can
And the firepower to make a difference.

You definitely need more than 2. One per member of your household is a good start. If your neighbors are poor planners and fail to arm themselves, then you might want to be nice and have a few extras on hand for them. Obviously, plenty of ammo is a must.BBYC wrote:Why not an AK

As for AR versus AK, they each have their advantages. AK is better if untrained people might need to use them. No need to keep it operating room clean, fairly simple manual of arms, and less likely that they would need to clear a jam. But AR ammo might be more readily available from abandoned military facilities, houses, and even stores. Either way, probably best to have at least one of each so you can use either ammo type that you happen to come across.

Obviously that is in jest, Soccerdad said about what I would have said. A semi auto in a common cambering will serve you well no matter the platform, that is really personal preference. Don't get 5 AR10's chambered in 260 Rem for when it hits the fan cause unless you stock piled ammo, you won't be running across any to pick up. You can't go wrong with .223/5.56, .308, or the commie 7.62x39.
In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law to pursue a natural justice.

There are a lot of good options. The Tavor is pretty battle proven, and would also be a good choice. Or if you could only have one, then it would be hard to beat a SCAR. A lot of it comes down to budget. Like most things in life.cheezit wrote:Why no love for an sks?

Don't forget the glock 19 as a sidearm or backup gun. Glock magazines and 9mm ammo should be plentiful in case things turn very south. A 19 would be perfect because it'll take both 19 and 17 magazines. That being said, it is best to have both just in case. Following the sentiment of Soccerdad, have one for each person in your household + 2 pairs backup + however much you want to share with your neighbors.

The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager

Any rifle with reasonable capability that you can use effectively will work. Even a 30-30 lever gun or a bolt action scout rifle would do the job if that is what you can use well. Stash a minimum store of ammo and magazines (if needed), get a good carry sling, and practice occasionally.
However, I think an AR is easy to use, easy to maintain, lightweight, cheap to buy spare parts and mags for, and the ammo is relatively cheap. These days there are pretty good deals on mags and ammo that you put away as an emergency stash.
InRangeTV on youtube (and other sites) has done mud testing with AR's and AK's. The AK didn't do as well as myth would have you believe. The AR did far better than most people would think. Also, if you follow AK Operator's Union on youtube, some of the cheaper AK's these days aren't as well built as the combloc rifles of previous decades.
