The article does not state whether he asked her to leave but the "unexpectedly" part tells me that she was not welcome. In my opinion, he had the right to get a firearm if he asked her to leave. It may have not been the wisest choice for him to do so.

I agree.. It'd be a tough sell to me if someone were to argue that a irritated unarmed girlfriend constituted enough of a threat to bring a firearm into it. I imagine there are exceptions, but I've never had the pleasure of dating one..
