The man believed the gun was unloaded, but it wasn't and it discharged, hitting him in the stomach.
Let me fix that part of the article:

"The man did not check to see if the firearm was loaded before pulling the trigger. He shot himself in the stomach."

I hate when articles make it sound like it's the gun's fault for discharging. The gun discharged. No, someone fired the gun. A gun doesn't fire on its own. (Except for rare cases of malfunction.)
