Did I technically violate the law when I unholstered my gun that night and placed it in the small portable safe that I brought for the purpose. After all, I did have an unholstered gun in my hand for a minute or so while in a location that was not under my control.
Unless your brother in law or sister gave you effective notice that they did not want your gun in their house, IMHO (not a lawyer) you didn't not violate any laws.
I know I didn't violate any laws carrying the gun. But I'm not sure about being able to legally unholster a gun in premises that are not under your control. Anyway, like TAM said, it is undoubtedly a moot point since even if illegal, prosecution would be extremely unlikely.
On the plus side, I encountered no locations in the DFW area where I was not allowed to legally carry my weapon. The trip included a visit to ICE at the Gaylord hotel, shopping at an Academy, a Cabelas, and two malls, and trips to several restaurants. We did make a quick run to the Windstar casino in OK. They had "no firearms" signs posted everywhere, and with me being ignorant of relevant OK law on signage, I left my gun in the car. At any rate, it was refreshing to see a lack of 30.06 signs in the DFW area.
