My state senator just wrote me

I had called her office and inquired about 'open carry' for 2007.

Here is a portion of her reply, which included other things as well...
Senator Jane Nelson wrote:I will be glad to give your idea regarding "open carry" firearms legislation careful consideration as I prepare for the next session, which begins in January 2007. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me again regarding any matter of importance to you.
Hey, Ladies and Gentlemen;
We do have a 'foot in the door'... shall we all get busy?

Hate to burst your bubble, but that really just sounds like a non-answer to me. One of those non positions that doesn't offend anyone. She didn't say she would support or propose it, just that she would consider it.

Wonder why she put open carry in quotes.

Burst bubbles or not we have to keep writing.

kw5kw, I don't know what was in your original message to Sen. Nelson, but a direct follow-up question might be, similar to what we asked our legislators here in Virginia on our restaurant carry problem, "Would you author and/or support legislation allowing open carry of handguns?"

She's been endorsed for 2006 by the Texas Municipal Police Association. Might that cloud her opinion on open carry?

...Truitt. She's a good one, for the most part.
I think in her case a letter-writing campaign would produce results

i've gotten a ton of letters from my senators and reps just like that. (i write my legislators all the time) one letter i actually got was not a form letter like all the others. it actually addressed the issue with a suggestion on how to handle it after the law was screwed up.

one real big surprise i got was when someone from one of the senator's offices actually called me to get me to elaborate on a letter i sent. the senator wanted to present it and needed me to give them more information on what i was proposing. at least i know they do pay attention.

A canned response letter. THis particular canned response must have been for the gun lobbyists.
