When you click post reply to reply to a topic, on the left you will see a bunch of the smiley faces. Place the cursor in the text you are typing where you want the smiley. Then you can either click on one of the faces in view or click the "View More Emoticons" link to bring up a window with all available smileys. This will insert keyword text that tells the webpage to display a smiley. You can take note of the text it inserts and just type that in if you use some commonly in the future.

You sure shoot a fine round.
Now for the smiles.
Type what you want to say & leave you curser at the place you want the smile.
With your mouse put your arrow on the smile you want to post. The arrow will turn to a pointy finger. Left click once. That will put the smiley face where you curser is.
There are more choices. To see them, Left click on view more Emoticons under the smileys.
When you choose one of them, the box will go down to your bar at the bottom of the page. It will say http://www.texassho... To get them back up the next time you want them, left click on it & they will display again.
6 months ago I could not do it either. Don't feel bad. You are in good company w/ the M1A & also w/ the computer struggles.
If I can't help you there are some really good comp guys on the board.
