We need to be thinking of his family at this time.
From KGNB AM News:
(Austin, TX) -- Longtime State Representative Edmund Kuempel died yesterday morning after suffering a 2nd heart attack in as many years. Kuempel was on his way to work in Austin yesterday morning when he stopped at an Austin convenience store and asked the clerk to call EMS before he collapsed. Paramedics arrived to find that Kuempel’s internal defibrillator had been activated, and while enroute to Brackenridge Hospital, he went into full cardiac arrest and died. This was Kuempel’s second such heart attack. The first happened in May of 2009 when he was found inside a state capitol elevator and rushed to the emergency room. He survived that attack, recovering in record time, before announcing that he would seek reelection one last time this year.
Kuempel, a popular longtime representative, handily won the March primary race, and was uncontested in this week’s election, giving him 2 more years in office to add to his 26 years of previous service in the State Legislature. Kuempel was first elected to the State Legislature in 1983. From then until 1990 he represented Kendall, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties as House District 46. After redistricting in 1990, Kuempel then represented only Comal and Guadalupe Counties as House District 45 until another round of redistricting in 2000 made him the state legislator for Wilson, Gonzales and Guadalupe Counties, known as House District 44. He served those counties for 2 Legislative sessions in 07 and 09, and was preparing for a 3rd and final session when yesterday’s heart attack struck.
Kuempel was born and raised in Austin. He graduated from Austin High School and later got his bachelor’s in business from Texas Lutheran College in Seguin. He is survived by his wife Birdie, and two adult children, John Kuempel and Margaret Brady, along with a granddaughter and twin grandsons.
