BTW, a life sentence does not mean that the convicted person will die in prison. An inmate with a life sentence is eligible for parole in as little as 7 years. Even a life sentence in a capital crime is eligible for parole eventually (no less than 40 years).
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

I encourage those who are eligible to join, and those who aren't, to contribute:

Thank you.

Amen, they get my support each year. A wonderful organization that takes care of their own.

I work in Huntsville and had a flat fixed at Discount Tire that morning. I left there probably less than 15 minutes before they came through.

My father was seriously injured when two inmates tried to escape from the Eastham Unit in June '04. My prayers and sympathies go out to the family of Mrs. Canfield.

Another thread resurrection:

In separate trials both escapees were sentenced to death for the capital murder of the correctional officer.

Jerry Duane Martin was convicted and sentenced in 2009, and executed on 3 Dec 2013 after waiving appeals.

John Ray Falk's first go at court ended in a mistrial after an unusual appeal to a higher court by the prosecution on the day the case was to go to the jury. They were appealing the judge's jury instructions. He was eventually brought to court again, chose to represent himself, pleaded guilty to capital murder, and was sentenced to death after 28 minutes of deliberation by a jury on 01 March 2017. (I believe only a jury can sentence (or recommend) someone to death, not a judge by himself, but I may be wrong on that).

TDCJ proposed dismissing one of the correctional officers on horseback that day for failing " to maintain constant control and surveillance of his assigned work squad by allowing the offender crew to work in a proximity to his left and right at an unsafe distance." The two inmates approached him from two sides and while one distracted the officer, the other grabbed his revolver to start the escape. The officer resigned before disciplinary proceedings were completed.

Wow. I had forgotten about this. I never heard all the details. I read all of it just now. It took a while. Very sobering. Really reinforced why I carry all the time.
Gun control is like stopping drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to drive.
