IA: Man hospitalized after being shot with "blank"

#1

Post by seamusTX »

In Council Bluffs, Iowa, today, a woman chided her brother for handling a firearm in the house (no ages given, but these apparently were adults). He said that the gun was loaded with blanks and discharged one to demonstrate. Then he handed her the gun and told her to shoot try it. He is on life support. She has been charged with reckless use of a firearm.

In the military we were issued BFA's (Blank Firing Adapter) to put on the muzzle of our weapon. We were also instructed not to point it at anyone as an improperly mounted BFA could actually be launched by a blank round. The point being for the nOObs in the military (those unfamiliar with firearms) that blanks can be deadly at close range.

I used to have an old telephone company hard hat, the sturdy fiberglas kind, that I used to show in my home firearms safety classes, with a hole the size of a quarter near the right temple. A couple of co-workers playing around with a starter pistol put the hole there, and those were the blanks specially made for that type of started pistol, something like .25 rimfire, that wouldn't load in any conventional gun. The gun's barrel was bored through and then had two cross pieces in it, so the gasses went out the muzzle, and not to the sides like most of today's started pistols.

I should have made it more clear in my original message: The round that the women fired at her brother was a full-power round with a bullet. The bullet hit the man in the forehead.

As in, they thought it had blanks in it but didn't?

The old saying "Stupidity should hurt" really applies. In this case it may be fatal. I always hate to hear these kinds of stories they just give the antis more ammunition.

Maybe Charles Darwin was onto something.

This is very sad.

Growing up on a farm in central Iowa, there was an old joke about cutting the bottom two tiers of counties off the State of Iowa and adding them to the State of Missouri would raise the intelligence level of both states by 10%.

I believe Council Bluffs falls in those counties. 'Nuff said. :txflag:

I'd definitely have to agree with the commenter who pointed out how much it says about a person if the only photo the family can find to give the media is one of him lounging around in only boxer shorts.
