In Charlotte, North Carolina, yesterday, four males age 15 through 18 allegedly broke into the home of a 77-year-old man, tied him up, and robbed him.
After the robbers left, the man freed himself, armed himself, and went looking for the robbers. When he found them, he allegedly fatally shot one.
The three surviving robbers have been charged.
It is not known whether the robbers had weapons at the time of the shooting or whether they threatened or attacked the victim before he shot.

Larry McClure defends his father’s actions.
“That was a bold thing to chase behind them, I guess,” said Larry McClure, “but he's 77 years old -- you shouldn’t do people like that.”

Hunting down and killing criminals after the fact might get him in trouble in Texas too.

77 yr. old man is not one to mess with, depending on how punks look at it.

The article vaguely implies that he chased them down and shot one of them. Leaves a lot of wiggle-room as to whether he pursued and was threatened upon finding them. Not a bright idea, but an understandable reaction.
Also fails to mention what if anything happened to the wife he was worried about. That may have a lot of bearing on his state of mind.

I have come to the conclusion that the only thing guaranteed credible in any news story is the paper it's printed on.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961
