Lack of backstop in CHL 'class'!

Post by XinTX »

"The sheriff's office will be investigating the class's instructor, who they say is not licensed to teach CHL classes."

GRAYSON COUNTY, TEXAS -- A man was accidentally shot this afternoon by a stray bullet from a concealed handgun license class.

Lt. Rickey Wheeler with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office says students in a CHL class were shooting into a field at the Whitesboro rodeo grounds when a bullet struck a man who was fishing at a pond nearby.

The fisherman was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

The students say they couldn't see anyone in the direction they were shooting.

The sheriff's office will be investigating the class's instructor, who they say is not licensed to teach CHL classes.

Seems to me if the instructor wasn't licensed, then it wasn't a CHL class.

And even if he was licensed, if he's having students fire into an area where they cannot see their backstop, he shouldn't be.

I am up in this area. I would like to know what the "Instructor's" name is. If anyone finds out, please let me know.

FYI, the biggest CHL Training (Licensed) in this County is Red River Firearms in Sherman. And the majority of the Instructors are LEO's and the classes use the excellent indoor range at the Business.

So, it seems strange to me that there is someone "teaching" somewhere in a "field". And if they were, how long do they expect to continue if they are not a Licensed Instructor? The first class of fraudulent CHL-100's would be the last!

I would be very upset if I were fishing (normal activity) and I got shot by some clown that was shooting in an unsafe manner, and then to learn it was in a course?

Wow. The stupidity....
And of course, whether the instructor was approved or not, someone is going to look at this and say, "See, those CHL people are dangerous!!!!"

Pretty amazing to me that not one person in the group of students knew that shooting with no backstop is bad and had the fortitude to stop the shooting. I know it's a tough situation to be in but it just seems like someone in the group would have felt uneasy about the situation and stopped to ask some tough questions of the instructor.

I will bet this instructor is doing certification for an out of state license and is not a Texas CHL instructor.

:iagree: With Keith. Also could be a class of 2 or 3 & folks that are trying to get around the Texas class anyway are not going to be asking a lot of hard questions.

I'm thinking there may be a possibility of a CHL Instructor that may be incapacitated for some reason and having a "buddy" do the class and the real instructor just signs the CHL-100's.

This would explain how the Sheriff determined the "instructor" at the site was not licensed.

Of course this is illegal, but stranger things have been brought to light before. :banghead:

I have done a bit of research and come up with 3 names of instructors in the area of Whitesboro. One is well known and has a gun shop in the town and I know him to be on the up and up.

The other two appear to be not well known and have a very small web presence.

I will not post any of their names unless I find more about this and if I narrow it down to the culprit. :thumbs2:

I have the Utah and Florida permits. One of them requires prior training, documented experience, or live fire quals. Maybe that's what they were doing, trying to qualify for an out of state permit.

Stupid no matter how you slice it, of course.

Maybe it's another example of The Old Rancher's oft heard admonition that "sometimes the cheapest oats have already been run through the horse."
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

I don't know about that; you make people only taking the Utah course to qualify. ;-)

Yeah, but that's me. AND, we have a backstop.

So, I guess both of those are overkill!
