Welcome back; I'm glad you had a safe trip albeit somewhat discouraging. I remember when Lebanon was a safe haven for believers of all faiths.

Least to wish for, Lebanon got a new President, a new election law but the elections was pushed back 1 more yr till 2018.
Oh, Lebanon is hosting 2.2 million Syrian refugees and still Lebanese pound (lira) is stable at 1,500 to 1 USD since 1994.
On the other hand, taxes and cost of living are suffocating the economy and widening the gap between the rich and poor and smashing the middle class to oblivion. Only mafias, militias, and corrupt politicians are living the dream stepping over dead bodies and the junky heads of the youth.
The Parliament of Lebanon (Arabic: مجلس النواب Majlis an-Nuwwab; French: Chambre des députés)[1] is the national parliament of Lebanon. There are 128 members elected to a four-year terms in multi-member constituencies, apportioned among Lebanon's diverse Christian and Muslim denominations. Lebanon has universal adult suffrage. Its major functions are to elect the President of the republic, to approve the government (although appointed by the President, the Prime Minister, along with the Cabinet, must retain the confidence of a majority in the Parliament), and to approve laws and expenditure.
On 15 May 2013, the Parliament extended its mandate for 17 months, due to the deadlock over the electoral law. And, on 5 November 2014, the Parliament enacted another extension, thus keeping its mandate for an additional 31 months, until 20 June 2017,[2] and in 16 June 2017 the Parliament in turn extended its own mandate an additional 11 months to hold elections according to a much-anticipated reformed electoral law.

What is in this display case? It looks like pieces of fossilized stone (because I have a piece from Saudi Arabia that looks like that), but I'm having a hard time thinking that's what really in this case.

It is a natural incense from a Saudi Arabian Store in Beirut . It is very expensive one.

Welcome back! Nice to see some rebuilding going on, like the way that they preserved the archeological site under the confines of the new multi-family residences! Looking forward to hearing some travel stories on Saturday!

The fossilized stone I have (or had actually, it was in my room in SA) was part of an huge ancient tree found out in the desert - that agarwood looks exactly like it, so really perplexed me.

Welcome back. Glad you got to wind down a little in your homeland, even if it's not as stable as you had hoped for. Sorry you had to return to the water issues. These are memories for a lifetime so cherish every moment you were there.

Welcome back Beiruty. I was just reading in a USMC publication last week about a ceremony at the American Embassy, Beirut in 2014 where the Marine Security Guard (MSG) detachment was re-established after nearly 30 year absence of MSG's at the embassy. I have more then a passing interest in this as I was a MSG at the American Embassy, Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the early sixties. While there I and the 5 (that was all of us) other Marines became good friends of a former Marine who lived in Haiti who was from Lebanon. From his stories about Lebanon it was a nice place to live and visit.
I am sorry for your water problem. Where I live a lady went out of town for the week-end and when she returned she could see water running out of her house from under the front door. She had a real mess.

Thanks. I will be contributing as much as I can. Pistol Precision Rifle Reloading, 3-Guns, Personal Protection matches, Action Pistol Matches, and Tac Shotgun Matches are on the Agenda as I have some time.
