I entered public school in the late '40's. I remember well the "drills" we had in the '40's and '50's. Obviously what we need to protect us nowadays from nuclear attack is more SCHOOL DESKS!! Put them in every home and public building and they will save you from any harm when you crawl under them.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2018/01/30/heres-what-went-wrong-with-that-hawaii-missile-alert-the-fcc-says/

Following standard procedures, the night-shift supervisor posing as U.S. Pacific Command played a recorded message to the emergency workers warning them of the fake threat. The message included the phrase “Exercise, exercise, exercise,” the FCC report said, but it also included “This is not a drill" -- language used for real missile alerts.

The worker who then sent the emergency alert said they did not hear the “exercise” part of the message. This person, who has not been publicly identified, declined to be interviewed by investigators, but the worker did provide a written statement, the FCC said.

According to the FCC report released Tuesday, this worker is the only one who apparently did not understand it was a drill.

So it wasn't a case of hitting the wrong button, the employee wasn't paying attention when the words "exercise" were said over the speakers.
I hear he was re-assigned to the SHIELD Hellicarrier.

One of the reasons there are two missile launch officers who both decode the launch message and have to agree on what it says is to make sure one guy doesn't brain-burp us into a war. Maybe the Hawaii emergency management people could take a hint from that.

The article said they were changing procedures to do just that. Common sense would say you would want that anyways, for the same reason as you would want 2 person agreement for missle launch. The last thing you want to do is have an oops moment.

The current plan is for the governor to spend half an hour trying to figure out his social media password so he can notify people who happen to be on social media during a time they suspect there is an inbound missile. :biggrinjester:

The worker has been fired and the head of Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency has resigned:

The message containing the words "this is not a drill" has a clearer meaning than "exercise, exercise, exercise"
Liberty''s Blog
"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." John F. Kennedy

Indeed. And putting both in the same message is just ... amazing.
