Most probably were, but I'm sure there were at least a few who actually worked for a living.
The Army Air Corps (8th AF) sustained a few thousand more "casualties" in WWII than the Marines, and 80% were KIA. Both services suffered tremendous losses.

In some cases, but in my unit in RVN (101st Airborne) they called "us." (See my avitar) AH-1G Cobra "Army" gunship :cheers2:
