I seem to be coming into ownership of a mak-90 this weekend after working out a deal with a buddy of mine. It's circa 1993 and has the clunky thumb hole stock. Already confirmed that it's a straight back stamped receiver. Any thoughts on making it a bit more user friendly? It would be a setup for 100-150 yd pig plinking out at the farm as well as general messing about at the range with friends.
I was thinking about dropping on a TWS dogleg rail for my spare primary arms 1-4 scope, hogue forearm and pistol grip, would need a fire control group for 922r compliance so it could be magazine agnostic. Not sure on the stock setup. The m4 style would be nice for pull length. PA has a stock setup from Command Arms that looks interesting.
You folks have any suggestions?
AK Bits
Re: AK Bits
What I did to my MAK :
1.Installed a 922R compliance kit from tapco, trigger is much worse than my original , but oh well...hardest part was changing the gas piston.
2.punched out the underfolder holes on the receiver and installed a underfolding stock.
3. bought a Texas Weapon Systems top cover and rear peep sight ( sight mounts all the way at the rear of the cover, really improved my accuracy)
If I had to do it again, I probably would not have installed the underfolder, should have just put standard AK wood on it, just can't get a cheek weld on that underfolder.

Thanks Andy!
Trying to avoid the whole folding stock bit. I like the looks but cannot fall in love with the feel. The friend who has it now has folders on his mini-30 and 10/22 and they just feel wrong once you look through the sights.
Hopefully will be able to post some before and after pics this weekend. Decided to try the Command Arms stock with the polymer tube first to see how much trouble it will be to mount. Figure that way I won't be out too much if it doesn't work. I really would have liked the Rifle Dynamics mount, but it's a bit more to shell out with uncertain fit (they specifically call out the Chinese mode
ls as a will not fit.. doesn't mention if it's due to slat cuts or the slightly different tang....).
I can always fall back and punt to an Ironwood stock if it's /really/ off.
Put in an order for the following this morning: Hogue foregrip (+1 US part), Ergo Pistol grip (+1 US Part), Tapco Double hook trigger set (+3 US parts), Command Arms collapsable stock (+0? US part...will have to confirm as it seems some of their items are from Israel), TWS Dogleg mount & Peep (doesn't count for 922r), Primary Arms 1-4 (also doesn't count) and some US Palms magazines (+2/3 US parts...I think the mag and plate are 1 piece so...). Will pickup the parts this week and head up to Ft. Worth this weekend to pickup the rifle. I suspect Friday night will be build session time.
