7.62x39 AR

AKs used to be cheap. A budget RomAK was half the price of a budget AR. Now prices are reversed, with basic ARs selling for less than AKs. That got me thinking about 7.62x39 AR rifles.

If I am not going to suppress the rifle, 300BLK and 7.62x39 softpoints Iook like they have similar ballistics. However, the Russian ammo is cheaper. Even ignoring the steel cased stuff, 7.62x39 hunting ammo is more affordable than comparable 300BLK ammo.

What should I look for? Any brands to avoid? Is there any reason not to just buy a 7.62x39 upper and use it with my current lower? Right now, I'm thinking hogs but with soft points it should be good for hunting anything 30-30 can.

I was in your shoes a couple years ago. Basically, all the posts online about feed ramp issues and gas ports being too small scared me away. I built a .300 BO and started reloading for it. If you are a reloader you can buy pulled surplus 147 grain .30 cal bullets and reload pretty cheap. That being said, I have always wanted a 7.62 x 39mm AR and may do that now that AR stuff is much cheaper . Please post how yours turns out if you go that route. Thanks

One more thing, here is a good article on how to set one up for proper functioning.

I've had a radical firearms upper 7.62x39 ar for about 2 years now and I love it. Got about 1400 rounds through it with out any problems. The main thing to getting them to run is the mags. I'm running ASC mags in both the 10 and 30 rnds. Also if your going to run run a lot of steel you need to run full power trigger group springs because of the hard Russian primers. With brass any trigger will work.

I've heard good stuff about the PSA uppers and BCG's but I haven't tried one yet. I did buy one of their 10 1/2 barrels for a pistol build that I'm working on gathering the parts for.

There's a couple routes you can go if you want 7.62x39.

You can get a Romanian parts kit and then buy a receiver and barrel plus ffl fee and your gonna spend about 475. And those are good quality parts and make a good gun. Only downside is you either have to already have the tools to do it or pay somebody to. In my Case I had the tools from previous builds. You can go through palmetto state armory and order the AK build kit then order their upper and with ffl transfer get out for about 525 that's even with magpul furniture and it takes 30 minutes to assemble when you get it and PSA has a video showing you step by step. Or you can build the AR-47 from PSA. I love PSA. They make great quality stuff and I have NEVER had any issues. Currently with 5 AR platform rifles from then and an AK I love them all. All flawless and work great. Their 300blkout I've got is amazing and suppressed it's crazy quiet same with the AR-47 in 7.62x39

I went a similar route. PSA upper. Definitely use ASC mags. You need a slightly longer firing pin than you would for 5.56. I only run brass ammo in mine, but it is hard to find and much more expensive. Use your same lower and you will be fine. No need for a different one.

AK's are getting cheaper again. MD63's and -65's are $450, and are good rifles. PSA AK's are around $600 and have a pretty good rep from what I have seem. PSA also has an AK/AR hybrid called the KS-47 like the Mutant, but less expensive.
