First time flying with handgun

Post by Originalist »

Just wanted let everyone know that today Me and my wife are flying to Pa with my handgun. Flew Southwest and they were 1. very accomadating (spelling) and 2. very easy and hassleless to declare. Will let you all know how it turns out at our destination when we pick it up. Right now we're are at the USO at Midway Int Airport in Illinois (Chicago). FYI police here still pack old school revolvers (not that that is a bad thing). Just not what I am used to.

Also love this site, relatively new but I am glad that I was able to find a decent informative site. Thanks Mr. Cotton

And everyone of them gets a single bullet to keep in their shirt pocket. ;-)

Safe travels to you. I'm looking fwd to hearing how the return check in goes.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

AFCop, I hope your travels went well and you returned/will return safely, without hassle. On the issue of hassle, for your future travels with a checked handgun, you may wish to try to arrange your itinerary so you avoid changing planes in gun-hostile cities or states, such as the city of Chicago or NY state. If your flight is cancelled and you find yourself stuck in one of those places, you could encounter some difficulty resuming your travel (ie, handcuffs and jail after you try rechecking your firearm). Some jurisdictions do not respect the idea of a law-abiding gun-owner's peaceable journey. Maybe your military ID/occupation would encourage them to give you a free pass, but Joe Blough with his CHL or other CCW would be SOOL. If I found my flight diverted to a place like Chicago or NYC and I had checked a firearm in my luggage, I would probably bail from the airport, get a one-way car rental and drive as carefully as I could into the next gun-friendly state I find.

Just something to think about in the future.
