Lawmaker Withdraws Deadly Force Bill
Wednesday January 24, 2007 12:39pm

Little Rock (AP) - A lawmaker withdrew a bill Wednesday that would have eliminated a person's responsibility to retreat before using deadly force.

Representative Jerry Taylor, a Democrat from Pine Bluff, pulled down the bill after receiving an hour's worth of tough questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Taylor says it would be "a waste of time" to bring back the measure before the committee after today's discussion.

The bill would remove the requirement that a person who is attacked has a "duty to retreat" before turning to deadly force. It also removes the retreat requirement if the person using force is a law enforcement officer or a person assisting at the direction of a law enforcement officer.

I may be wrong, but I think this is the first time a "Castle Doctrine" bill has failed. This is a real surprise.

Talk about bad news. Don't other states typically follow other state's lead? I sure hope not. That's a shame. I hope it passes here but then it'll give me another thing to remember going across state lines......
