K Frame N frame and J frame

How do you tell which frame your revolver is? Does it even matter?

Thanks for the link, I too have wondered the differences of the various alphabet revolvers.

It would be less confusing if they stamped them with a J or a K or what have you for the ignorant masses like me...

Yeah it shouldn't be too hard to stamp L-686 for example, on them, but I guess they like to keep us confused.

You need a chart for the designations, because the numbers don't really give you much of a hint as to frame size.

Wow thanks jusme! That totally answered my question. I have always been so confused when people refer to their wheel guns as different letters and now I know.

And the term "J-frame" has become more or less synonymous with "snubbie"............except when it is a K-frame snubbie .......... But seriously, "J-frame" has become so synonymous with snubbie that I've even see people use the term to describe snubbies made by manufacturers other than S&W, even though "J-frame" is a S&W term.

Years ago, I once owned an aluminum framed Model 12 Airweight .38 Special snubbie, based on a K-frame.

On my S and W 686...When i removed the wood grips it had the year it was made on the under side of the steel grip part.
