I've always wondered about the G17

What's the main difference between the Glock 19 and 17 other than capacity and that the slide looks a little longer? I have a 19 and had a 26 and have played with the 34. But never really got to handle a 17. Is the 17 really that much bigger? I've seen guys in here talkin about concealing the 17. And does anybody know the weigh difference loaded between the 19 and 17

I have both.

I really like the G17. It is only a little bit larger than the G19, but at the scale we are talking about, that little bit makes a difference to me in concealed carry. I have carried both using exactly the same holster(s), and while the G17 worked, the G19 just works better as a daily carry gun. Grip doesn't print as much, the barrel isn't as long so more comfy and less likely to protrude below an untucked shirt (when I was carrying OWB), just generally feels "right". So I carry the G19 with a G19 magazine in it, but a G17 mag as a reload.

The G17 is 1/2 of an inch longer on the muzzle and on the bottom of the grip. That's it.

Seemingly small amount, until you try to pull a tucked in shirt over it and it prints like crazy, but the G19 disappears under the same shirt.

Also, shooting with gloves on. I have big hands and the tiny difference of adding a pair of Mechanics Gloves screws up my grip pretty bad on a 19/23 size frame. No problem on a 17/22/21.

I agree, and I do the same thing. Furthermore, I've found that 95% of the time I can just as easily carry my G19 as my G26. The little bit of size difference doesn't seem to affect concealability negatively for me (unless I am tucking my shirt in), and I get a much higher capacity, better accuracy, and control with my G19 over the 26.

I personally always preferred 19. That extra muzzle and grip length seems small on paper, but I could never get a truly comfortable carry with 17. Printing obviously is not an issue now.

G19 carries like dream.

Think about it this way. More capacity = more height (longer grip). More accuracy (longer barrel and sight radius) = longer gun. This is the basic trade-off you are looking at. Glock models are available in small increments of about +/- 1/2 inch in both dimensions, so you should be able to find that Goldilocks "just right" compromise fairly easily.

You can also get creative with Glocks if you are willing to spend a few bucks or invest some time. Let's say that you really like the accuracy of a G17 or even a G34, and are able to comfortably conceal the slide length, but the grip height makes it print too much for your liking. You can "chop" the grip down to a G19 or even G26 height. You will give up some capacity, and your hand may not fit as well on the grip, of course. Same thing for a G19 chopped down to a G26 grip height. Unfortunately, I don't think this works the other way (can't get a G17 grip height with a G26 slide length).

Here is one company that offers this service for $70 if you are not mechanically inclined or just want it to look real Purdy when you are done (but if you care about looks, why do you have a Glock in the first place?). I've actually considered having them convert my G19 to a G26 grip height. I would give up 5 rounds in the first mag (could still use G19 back-up mags), but gain a 3/4 inch reduction in grip height. And my hand fits good on a G26 frame.

I just got my G17 back from STIPPGRIPS down in Hillsboro. Feels GREAT in the hand. Had the grip and some other contact points on frame stippled, had the finger grooves removed and had the trigger guard undercut. Very pleased with results.

I own and have carried both. I don't carry the G17 anymore for the simple reason that the G19 with its backup mags has very nearly the capacity. The weight isn't really an issue for me......as bblhd672 pointed out, the weight difference is minimal. While the G17 carries very well for a full sized gun, it is noticeably bulkier than either my 19 or 26. These days, my 17 is a bedside gun, and I carry the 19 and 26. I think that of all my Glocks, the 19 is my favorite.

If I were shooting a match, I'd prefer the 17 for its higher capacity, slightly higher weight, and longer sight radius. If I were packing a 3-gun "war chest", I'd pack the 17 along with a shotgun and an AR. If I were packing a briefcase/laptop bag, I'd pack the 17. It's a great pistol, and mine is also by far the softest shooting semiauto I own.

But for EDC carry? I'll take the 19 or the 26.
