Re: Single Stage Press: Hornady vs RCBS?

I have and have had a 'few' presses. Currently I think I am down to 5 total, this is a low point.
Your absolute best bet is to find a nice, previously love rcbs - they are always out there and like almost any good tool - they wear in, not out. As long as the RAM (not the handle) has no side play, you are good to go. If you are of the mindset that it has to be new, then I would lean towards either RCBS or Lee. Like many things, they dont build them like they used to, and you will find little substantive quality difference between the two and only a minor degree of cosmetic difference with RCBS hopefully having better fit and finish.
I have had many dealing with both of their customer service and have been nothing but impressed. Redding also has excellent service, however their entry price point is a bit higher. I have had two separate unrelated dealings with Hornady and have yet to be satisfied, let alone impressed.

Dies come with the same advice, with Lee being the best bang for the buck for general purpose, and redding having superior quality control.

For powder measures, the rcbs uniflow is the standard, the redding br series is the cadillac. Here lee trails significantly behind - plastic components and chunky stick powders do not interact well.

regardless of brand or style, well maintained tools should outlast their user. Between feeding my own addiction and teaching hundreds of metallic reloading classes and loaning out equipment I have presses with easily 6 figure round counts and dies probably getting close. Keep them clean and lubed and its all good. I still use a set of rcbs carb 45acp dies dated 1967. I am the second owner, the first was a very prolific bullseye shooter) - if you take care of it, it should last you. If you need any help getting set up or pointer, feel free to shoot me a message.
