So you are telling me that because I did something stupid when I was younger and then I plead no contest to a misdemeaner charge of family violence that I will never legally be able to own a firearm?? Is there anything that I can do?

I was convicted of a family violence charge 8 years ago and have not had any criminal charges since. Can I buy a handgun in Texas? Or am I forever banned?
