Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

The entry fee varies from 125 to 140 plus processing by eventbrite, a couple of dollars.

You can run an AR pistol if you want I suppose, but there are targets out to 500. An AR pistol will have issues in the wind at ranges over 300 I would guess. I run a 18 inch barrel so I do not lose too much velocity to minimize wind effects. You would not be able to use an AR pistol on the pistol targets due to the danger from the steel up close.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

Waco TF did select their name to fit the letters.

I have run all but the Oct 2016Crawford biathlons and this is the first time I have cleaned the shooting stages, usually have at least 1 or 2 DNFs. I am a greybeard so have never done the wall though I plan to eventually, just take the 15 minute penalty and call it good. Tried to paste the DNF stats but failed so here they are: stg1 39%, stg2 44%, stg3 73%, stg4 28%, stg5 17%, stg 6 39%, stg7 51%. The big killers were stages 3 and 7. I am sure the problem with stage 1 was the time spent going over the suspended tire wall. The tires were slippery. I do not like stage 5 when there is a lot of mud, it makes climbing the tree rather difficult. All the stages have there difficulties you have to figure out how to overcome it just becomes if you can do it in the timeframe allowed. The addition of the tire crawl at the end was a real pain and got all my gear fully mudded up.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

Last Weekend's Waco TF was mudfest with rain and hail in the am. I was at least able to get all 7 stages with out DNFing.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

I say try it, that is the only way you will know what you need to work on improving. It will keep you younger and be a motivation to loose some weight. I have improved with age. The competition level has definitely improved and made me work harder and gives me something to work on every week. Dan creates a tough course and it is designed to have at least a 20 to 30 % DNF rate on most of the stages. I consistently have two DNFs per run at the Waco TF but did not have that issue at Cresson. I am going to get to no DNFs one of these days it is always something. This past weekend was my worst showing in a couple of years.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

equin

You were not alone I could not get over the wire on stage 1. My boots had no purchase so I DNF stage 1 as well as Stage 7. i May have found your score card just before the integrety item pickup point. I turned it in to stage 3 RO but you may have already left. I recommend ziplok plastic bag for storing your score card the clip is really just at the stage to keep track of all the watches. I also carry spare plugs in a ziplok and some bandaids because the high probability of finger cuts. I in fact slicked up my left middle finger by my rifle forearm while falling down on the plywood at the bonus due to slippery mud. I suggest looking at incorporating a camelback it will help carrying the weight and is easier to access.

It was a mud fest and the energy expended was way greater than usual due to the weight of your feet with mud and unstable footing. My muscles are much sorer than usual after the event.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

The saturday morning runners, it did not matter when you started you got rained on. I started at 1:35 and finished at 17:11 of that time they subtract wait and shoot time which was 135 minutes. I took an hour and a half to "run it". There were alot of up and down hills. So the distance was effectively increased and associated work out.

The people that ran it sunday had it easy, less mud, warmer, and sunny. I at least did not get rained on, but I have done that before. It is a good test of your character and shows you how difficult everything becomes with percip.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

I am on the 2 pm heat. I just did some regular jogging of about 3.5 miles so you are doing better than I was since I did not have a pack. I plan to conduct jogging with weights till the event.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

Last time I ran it all the stages were 180 sec, it is detailed in their course of fire on the website. The Lonestar has not defined it yet. The Waco TF, have generally topped off mags while running/moving between stages, sometimes during a wait.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

You can use a backpack, I use a camelbak to carry spare ammo to refill mags, but it makes it tough to get a new mag to finish a stage. The Waco event were 180 sec max so time digging in a backpack makes it difficult to complete the stage. Check out the photos from the 1st Waco event or the other photos from Lone Star event page. You will see a wide variety of loadouts from warbelts to vests, or old Vietnam era Alice web gear.

Re: Lonestar Armory Run and Gun (Biathlon)

I registered for the Cresson event and have run the Waco Tactical Fitness (since the abbr does not pass muster)and Zombie Destruction a couple of times.

I would recommend practicing some non-conventional shooting positions and conditions, they tend to turn-up in the biathlons. Knowing your ranging and cross wind hold overs will be useful. We have had some 20 mph crosswinds on 400 yd targets before.

Make sure you can carry all your equipment and ammo loadout and be able to run with it for the extended period. It is tougher than you think when you have about 25-35 lbs of mags, ammo, pistol, rifle, and water.

Good Luck it is alot of fun.
