The last few times I did attend the State Fair I did what Carlson does and simply said that I need to see the officer without telling them why. None of the officers have asked about knives or anything and I didn't tell them.
Exactly! If I wasn't asked directly, I don't try to help them. And even if asked, I might have forgotten what I had in my pocket :coolgleamA: :tiphat: :biggrinjester:

Re: Mean streets of Dallas - Texas State Fair shooting

It's really funny that they allow the firearm but not the knife and OC. I think I remember reading that a few years back before I went. I won't say what I carry into the Fair ;-)

Re: Mean streets of Dallas - Texas State Fair shooting

Another update from the Morning News.

Alleged State Fair of Texas shooter told police he acted in self-defense, affidavit says
https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2 ... avit-says/

The man accused of shooting three people Saturday night at the State Fair of Texas told police he was acting to defend himself and his family, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

But an officer at the scene wrote that Cameron Turner was by himself when the shooting happened.

America has become a third world middle eastern country. So much for their brand new metal detectors. I guess they could have been LTC holders. I sure hope not.
I would be hard pressed to carry an 8 shot revolver with any regularity. For one, the weight. Second, I'm lacking on my reload skills. I'll do it around the house and occasionally when I walk my dog at my nearby park. But I've to often seen "bad things" happening there so I normally carry my full size Glock with a spare magazine when going there. Same goes for my 1911's. They've gotten to heavy for the capacity :(

Re: Mean streets of Dallas - Texas State Fair shooting

Ya definitely sounds like training is leading to a lack of security at the fair. Which leads further to the thought that you will be your own first responder. I really need to get into a habit of carrying a tourniquet and IFAK on me regularly.

Had this pop up on my Google feed on my phone. Interesting reading. I can see how this system can be fooled with a combination of lack of training and laziness in the part of Fair security.

What are the 'weapons detectors' outside the State Fair of Texas?

Very interesting.

For those that have been to the Fair this year, have you noticed a change in their security procedures going through the gates?

Re: Mean streets of Dallas - Texas State Fair shooting

I'll be curious, since they caught the guy, if he had/has an LTC and how he got in i.e. what gate he came through. This being said, the saying goes "Nothing good happens after.." and you can fill in the blank on the time. I enjoy going to the fair. I turned 52 this year and I've been to the fair the most in the past 5-10 years than I've had any of the previous times in my life. But... I always go during the week and I always go early in the morning and I'm usually out by 2-3 at the latest. I have ridden dart the last few times to avoid dealing with traffic and parking and glad I am able to carry. It's one of the few times that I'm in a crowded environment where I see such a diverse mixture of people and you just never know what you are going to get.

I did some digging on a couple of news sites and found the following.

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2 ... -of-texas/
According to police, one person was arrested after running from the scene of the shooting. Officers also recovered a gun at the scene.
Dallas police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Cameron Turner. He was booked into the Dallas County jail early Sunday morning facing at least one aggravated assault charge. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.
Instead of metal detectors, fair visitors walk through what is known as an “open gate system.”

https://www.fox4news.com/news/state-fai ... sures-2023
Instead of walking through metal detectors, visitors will be screened through what is called an open gate system.
"This is going to be where you won't have to take your phone out of your pocket. You won't have to put your bag down. This is going to read through all of that. This is the latest and greatest technology when it comes to detection. We're looking for weapons so this is going to be able to detect any of that as people walk through it," Condoianis said.
