Yes, sir, by the CDC's own guidelines, you are correct. Only a properly worn mask DESIGNED to exclude virus particles will aid in prevention for the wearer. The other masks people are urged to wear are to help prevent THEM from potentially spreading it to others via droplets if they are infected but do not know it.
Testing positive does not mean you are 'sick' and have to recover. You can test positive and remain syptom free (asymptomatic) thus not 'sick'. Assuming he recovers he could use this as a "pivot point" and say now that he's been through it, he has a better understanding of it and how to manage it going forward... that would take away joe's best argument against him. (even though joe is way overboard on pandemic mgmt- lots of old people are more cautious vs less)
