Also, how is it that this waste of protoplasm is still alive AND UNTRIED TWO YEARS AFTER HIS ARREST.
Courts at their own pace, and the bigger the case, the slower they move. I would guess capital cases are among the most litigated, and I know that early on the court wanted psychological evals done, which didn't do anything to make this go faster.

Suing a then 19 year old for 1 mil.? Is he a trust fund kid?
My understanding is his parents are local well-to-do, but I don't think they are stupendously wealthy. The mother is a travel writer and the father comes from a long-time Seguin family that had a chain of theaters, but sold them in the 90s. The father was a Seguin city councilman at one point.

They are probably very comfortable, but not Bernie Sanders levels of wealth and power...

Re: TTPD officer killed...

Latest update I can find:
Hollis Daniels Makes First Court Appearance

All the article says is he made his first court appearance, no results or other status. I believe the date was 22 March 2019.

Re: TTPD officer killed...

01 Dec: Court documents show prosecution will seek death penalty if defendant is tried and convicted. Court documents also indicate defendant may or likely will be found incompetent to stand trial, in which case he would be sent to North Texas State Hospital, Vernon Campus.

Re: TTPD officer killed...

There were two officers that went to the dorm room for the welfare check, and where the defendant was frisked. The officer who was killed was one of them. If it was the other officer who conducted the frisk, I would be horrified if I were him, or any other officer who searched the defendant and missed the gun. He should probably be on suicide watch, especially today.

Re: TTPD officer killed...

The DA has filed for civil forfeiture of the defendant's vehicle.

This article says details from the lawsuit documents reveal that the police do think he smuggled a gun into the police station and pulled it from his pants to shoot the officer. He had been handcuffed when brought to the station, but was uncuffed during processing.

It also says the welfare check was prompted by a call, not from his family which is what I'm pretty sure I read earlier, but by people living in the same dorm who reported that they heard a gun shot from his room at about 3am. The responding officers frisked him, apparently not finding a gun, and then found marijuana and pills in his dorm room.

Lubbock (not TTU) police officers had only two hours earlier stopped the defendant because a homeowner had reported that the defendant has stolen a handgun from the homeowner's night stand. The Lubbock police did not search his vehicle because the defendant did not consent and the officers say they had no probable cause.

It doesn't say whether TTU officers were aware of the earlier stop by the Lubbock police.

ETA: Reading a little closer, I realize that the TTU police did not make their welfare check until the evening of 9 Oct, even tho the residents apparently heard a gunshot at 0300 that morning. The news articles just say it was not clear when the residents called the police.

Re: TTPD officer killed...

I read the link threoh8 provided, and while I know there are pieces missing, I am even more boggled that it seems TTPD did not thoroughly search this kid. It looks like they got two separate inputs that he might have a gun, one from his family and one via the stolen gun/matching vehicle route, and still...

Re: TTPD officer killed...

This has a lot of detail: http://heavy.com/news/2017/10/hollis-da ... -shooting/

Says he was alone with officer who was killed, and when another officer heard the shot and came in, the dead officer still had a handgun in his holster.

This story has text from the arrest warrant: http://www.everythinglubbock.com/news/l ... r_KAMCNews
A .45 caliber pistol loaded with RP ammunition was located where Hollis Daniels was arrested.
Seguin is the town near where I live, and I work in Seguin, but did not know this family.
