I think it would help your defense greatly if you are actually in a volunteer emergency service (VFD, CERT..), but as it is written just about anyone would fall under that definition.
This bill is a great victory for 2A in TX. Let's just hope we don't have Mr. CPR card walking into 06/07 location with his rig trying to make his case...

You will be not only helping out your community, but you'll also receive valuable training and certification in Fire/EMS. Getting pass the 06/07 signs is just an added bonus.
If you are older and/or unable to run calls, many departments would love to have your help at the administrative end.

You can search for the bill by using the "Search Legislation" box in the middle of your screen. Just make sure that the "Legislature" box is set to 85(R) - 2017 and that the "Bill Number" radio button is selected.
By default, it will take you to the history tab which gives the most recent information on the bill. If you want to see a graphic of the process, go to the "Bill Stages" tab.
Voila! You know exactly as much as everyone else does, and I've taught a man to fish!
If the Governor doesn't veto it, HB435 will become law on June 18, 2017 with an effective date of September 1, 2017.

It was sent to Gov. for signing on 5/30. Does anyone have an update? I can't seem to find anything after 5/30.

Also, while paid ff/ems workers are not included explicitly, note that they are also not excluded.
I know. It is wierd through my non lawyer eyes. I can only speculate that SFFMA maybe had some input, as this State is pressured by IAFF continuously to be all paid. So, an extra incentive for volunteers? I don't know. Just thinking out loud.

Also, anyone can go to SFFMA and for $30/year become a member. You don't have to be affiliated with a dept. if you are paid guy, you are at least tcfp basic ff. Submit your app to SFFMA and you become "certified ff2" through SFFMA, a volunteer ff association.

I'm not 100% sure, but all major fire/ems depts. around here (north Texas) that are paid, that I know of, have strict no guns allowed while on duty policy.
It's a political spiel you know...
Off-duty however I'd expect them to be covered under this bill as they are all ff/ems certified.
