It's not that they want people to be hurt and killed by criminals. It's just that allowing people to defend themselves might lead to the absurd notion that the people do not need to be completely reliant on the government for their protection. Then you get nasty notions like self sufficiency, and dare I say it, "freedom". This dolt has somehow completely forgotten about sharp pointy stick control and heavy rock control. Clearly we need some common sense restrictions on those weapons of war as well!
