There aren't thousands or tens of thousands of these cases; the complex web or circumstances that allows a child access to a firearm could be investigated from individual cases. Scientists are not prophets. Their credibility stems from following a method. When they fail or refuse to do so, they are no more credible than the next person in line at Subway.
The problem with this particular report is there doesn't appear to be any "scientists" involved. The lead person is a "family sociologist and demographer" from New Zealand (which BTW to her "mind your own business in your own country thank you. You don't tell Americans how to live and we might be willing to help you again the next time an Imperial Army tries to take over the entire Pacific"). The other two are just the usual academic hacks who are most likely progressive socialists.
