Having owned (and worked on) an Iver Johnson .30 carbine:

It is a decent carbine, ballisticly very similar to the .357.

It is VERY magazine-sensitive, and it can be challenging to have a stock of serviceable mags.

If the mags run, generally ammo doesn't make much difference, IF the gas system isn't buggered from the manufacturer.

They weren't terribly uncommon in rural police/SO cruisers, on in early Special Weapons And Tactics team armories, in the '60s-late '70s.
