Re: Shotgun clinic ammo...

NcongruNt wrote:Just a quick question while I think about it...

What type of shotgun ammo is recommended for the shotgun clinic? I generally shoot #4 Buck in my practice rounds, but if there is a preferred shot that you you would like us to use, I'll go ahead and stock up on that. This brings up my next question... how many rounds are required for the shotgun clinic? I'll be sure to get lots more than the minimum, but would like a general number to start from.
I don't know but I'll find out. There may be an issue with PSC rules related to using shotguns in pistol bays. We have one bay set aside for home defense shotguns, but I'm not sure what shot size limits exist, if any.

Re: Planning has started for this year's event

I didn't have my schedule with me when I posted this years activities, so my seminar and shooting clinic was done from memory. At my age, that's dangerous and of course I left out at least one shooting clinic and the Friday evening gathering. Donna Vandermolen will be teaching a Ladies-Only Shooting clinic and we will have some some social gathering Friday evening during the registration period.

One more q: Is there a website with all the information on it? Ideally I'm looking for a flyer or something online so I can send to my neighbors ... maybe something with times, class options, activities, etc? I understand things are probably still being planned, but there are a few folks in our neighborhood that just might be interested in driving down.

Thanks guys! I'm loving this ...

Hi Tiffany:
I'm working on a schedule to publish now. I hope to have it on http://www.TexasShooting.com and probably http://www.pscIDPA.com in the next week or two. I had hoped to have it set up to register on-line, but I don't think that's going to happen.

I can tell you what seminars and shooting clinics are definitely going to be on the schedule and there likely will be a few more, especially seminars.

The following are set:
Shooting Clinics
1. Basic Skills (proper grip, trigger control, sight alignment/picture) [Instructor TBA]
2. Basic Drawing & Reloading [Instructor TBA]
3. Moving Targets, Moving Shooters [Instructor TBA]
4. Close Quarter Battle [Instructor TBA]
4. Defensive Shotgun[Instructor Gregg Garrett]
5. IDPA Basics [Instructor Steve Vandermolen]
6. Ladies-Only Shooting Clinic [Instructor Donna Vandermolen]

Seminars
1. Awareness [Speaker Steve Vandermolen]
2. Ladies Issues [Speaker Donna Vandermolen]
3. Christians & Self-Defense [Speaker Marc Gentine]
4. TABC Laws & Procedures [Speaker Stephen Rothstein]
5. You Be the Judge (Video what-if scenarios) [This one is VERY tentative]
6. CHL Fashion Show (Demonstrations of concealed-carry methods and equipment)
7. Gun Cleaning & Maintenance [Speaker TBA]
8. Training Opportunities (discussion of courses, schools & instructors available locally and nationwide) [Speaker Charles Cotton]

All Day Events
1. Texas Stars (two)
2. Find the Gun for You [formerly Battlefield Pick-up] (Various handguns available for shooting)
3. Plate Rack
4. Mini-Clinics (for individual or small group instruction)

The fee has not been set. Last year was the first year we charged anything and the fee ($15) was intended to cover lunch ($9) and the PSC non-member fee ($6). We were not going to arrange lunch this year and let people do that on their own. This would let us drop the fee to $6 for non-members and no fee for PSC members. However, too many people didn't like the idea of not having lunch available, so we haven't decided what to do. I would like to get the Bun-Stuffers back this year so we don't have to deal with catering and people can simply buy what they want. This also lets us go back to no fee for PSC members and $6 for non-members. The only problem is that we need a pretty accurate attendance number to give the Bun-Stuffers, otherwise they buy too little or too much food.

I'm not bragging on myself because I'm only a very small part of this event, but the annual TexasCHLforum Day at PSC gets better every year. We have a dedicated crew of instructors and speakers who donate their time and expertise in a combined effort to offer a unique opportunity to learn and have a great time. We also have a great group of folks who work hard to build necessary props, equipment and to set up and tear down the range for this event.

Many of the people on the crew are veterans of the six Texas State IDPA Championships we ran at PSC Shooting Club from 2001 through 2006. Many others joined the TexasCHLforum Day at PSC crew because they believe in goals of the event. To a person, everyone has said the participants make all of the hard work worthwhile. Not only is the event unique, the appreciation expressed by the people who come to the TexasCHLforum Day at PSC every year is also rare. Let's face it, it's a lot more fun working your tail off for people who appreciate your efforts!

This is really starting to sound like a sales pitch, so I guess I'll use it on http://www.TexasShooting.com.

Re: Planning has started for this year's event

Thanks folks. We are going to have some great new seminars and clinics this year. We also have a few other new things we're tossing around as well.

Since it appears that having food available at PSC is a bigger issue than we thought, we'll keep working on it. If we have enough people registered at least 6 to 8 weeks before Sept. 27, then perhaps we can get the Bun Stuffers back. I'd like to draft Stevie-d to do the grilling for us, but we don't have a pit large enough for the number of people that will be coming. :bigear: Is that a representative of the ladies contingent I hear offering to cook? :bigear:

This event gets better every year and that's because of the dedication of a lot of talented instructors, speakers and support personnel. All of them donate their time and labor to make this a fun and educational event. The single biggest factor that keeps these volunteers coming back every year is the fact that people attending truly appreciate the effort that goes into the annual TexasCHLforum Day at PSC.

If you have any ideas or requests you'd like to give us, please don't hesitate. We want all of the input we can get.

Snake Doctor wrote:I don't know about what all goes on at this event; Could someone tell us rookies more about it? Are there any photos on this site from years past? Do any young people attend? Two of my three closest friends have Texas CHLs and would tag along if this looks like a good event for us. Thanks for any thoughts.
We have seminars in the classroom and shooting clinics in the pistol bays. Last year's seminars were 1) Awareness/Ladies Issues; 2) Combat Mindset; 3) CHL Fashion Show; and 4) Texas Self-Defense/Deadly Force Laws (Friday evening). This year, these may change, except Steve & Donna will still be doing the Awareness/Ladies Issues seminar. Seminars were 1 hr. long.

The shooting clinics were: 1) Draw, Move & Shoot; 2) Moving Shooter & Moving Targets; 3) IDPA demonstration; 4) Close Quarters Battle; 5) Basic Skills; 6) Basic Drawing; and 7) Failure Drills. Shooting clinics were 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. long. New seminars will also be offered this year, but the basic ones will remain. We have far too many people new to shooting to abandon those.

In addition to seminars and clinics, we also have open shooting in the bays and the Texas Stars are always popular.

As others have said, it a truly unique learning opportunity made possible because of the dedication of talented instructors and speakers that donate their time to this event. It's also great to be able to meet many people we know only from the TexasCHLforum.

Planning has started for this year's event

Okay folks, we need to get an idea how many people are planning to come to this year's event. Unless plans change, the 2008 TexasCHLforum Day at PSC will be held on Saturday, September 27th, in lieu of our regular monthly PSC-IDPA match. We'll be incorporating some of the suggested changes and additions last year's participants gave us and we have a few of our own.

This year will also see some entirely new seminars and shooting clinics, but we will continue to offer our basis shooting skills clinics. Another change we are considering for this year is doing away with the catered lunch and letting people decide how and when they want to eat. This has proven problematic the last two years and it also was the primary reason we had to charge a $15 fee last year. It's early yet and this could change, but at this point the only fee will be the $6 non-member fee PSC Shooting Club, Inc. charges for all non-members shooting at the range.

If you think you'll be joining us in September, please post in this thread and tell us how many people will be coming with you. This will help us in early planning of events and equipment needed.

Also, please let us know if you would be interested in some form of social gathering on Friday evening Sept. 26th. We don't know what that will be, but before we start scratching heads to come up with something, I want to see if anyone is going to be there! I'm also considering offering a CHL renewal class starting at 6:00 pm Friday evening, but that one is a long shot. There would be a fee for that class.

Let us hear from you folks!
Chas.
