This is a very common issue for U.S. citizens who visit Canada. Since it's not a sale or transfer of ownership I don't think any paperwork would be involved. I agree that you should call ahead and make some arrangements. The FFL will know the answer. Make sure to get a receipt. ;-)
If it stays at the gun store overnight, then according to the BATFE, a "transfer" has taken place. It has to be logged into their bound book and logged back out when picked up. I think you'd have to go through the NICS check to get it back. For that, they may charge whatever fee they charge for a transfer, like if they receive a gun someone bought on gunbroker, since it's basically the same process. If the BATFE were to do an inspection while the gun is there (unlikely, but possible) and it's not in the book, the store could get in trouble over it.
